“The First Istanbul Talks Executive Board Meeting” was held in Istanbul Pendik on the 12th – 13th January 2013. About 30 academicians, authors, philosophers, media and civil society representatives from over 20 countries participated as Executive Board Members in the meeting which was carried out with the cooperation of Pendik Municipality and the Civil Diplomacy Centre which operates as part of the Political Talks Centre Association.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the idea, background, purpose, scope and method of the Istanbul Talks Meeting with the slogan “From Shared Values to a Common Future” and to discuss the theme, main subjects, and preparations for the first meeting that is to be carried out at an international level.
In addition to the current Executive Board, the Chairman of the Turkey Voluntary Formations Foundation (TCTV) which is the umbrealla organisation of civil societies in Turkey, the Chairman of the Anatolia Platform and leading representatives of civil society organisations that are active in our country attended the opening session on the first day of the First Istanbul Talks Executive Board Meeting that lasted two days. Also, Erol Kaya Member of Parliament from Istanbul, Öznur Çalık Member of Parliament from Malatya, Orhan Atalay member of Parliament from Ardahan, Şuay Alpay Member of Parliament from Elazığ, Cengiz Yavilioğlu Member of Parliament from Erzurum, Faruk Işık Member of Parliament from Muş, Murtaza Yetiş Member of Parliament from Adıyaman were amongst the participators of the meeting.
Ayhan Oğan, Chairman of the Political Talks Centre Association, who gave information about the meeting in the opening session said that humanity is at an important junction when looking at the developments in our region and on earth and stated that humanity is in search of a new civilisation in the east and west, almost as if it wants to open the door of a new era. Oğan stated that the main purpose of the Istanbul Talks is to bring together the intellectual knowledge of the Islamic world and turn this into a common mind and conscience, to discuss the political, social, economic, scientific and cultural problems of humanity with experts from different geographies and cultural worlds and to contribute to the rise of seminal insights for the future in overcoming these problems by sharing knowledge, opinion and experiences. Oğan indicated that the ultimate objective of the Istanbul Talks which is a ground to talk about our common problems at this junction is for our efforts to be transformed into encompassing horizon of consciousness, founding will and a sharing morality which aims for the prosperity and development of all humanity.
Important decisions were made regarding the Istanbul Talks as a result of the negotiations during the technical sessions that started after the opening session. Information was given about the principles and the main working areas of the Political Talks Centre Association in the first working session of the meeting, and the main idea, scope and background of the Istanbul Talks Project and the projects key outputs, purpose and expectations were discussed. In the second session after the negotiations of the main idea of the Istanbul Talks the participators worked on shaping the method, structure and context of the Istanbul Talks in order to make the most of the project in line with the aims and expectations. In the third working session where negotiations were made regarding the management structure of the Istanbul Talks Executive Board an agreement was reached about the duties and responsibilities of the Executive Board, the frequency of the meetings and about possible names that can be added to the board. In the last working session of the meeting issues such as the theme and subjects, time and place, the program, format and potential participants of the forthcoming first session of the Istanbul Talks were planned.
At the end of the meeting the summary of the agreed points, next steps to be taken and the action plan was presented and the commission member’s comments and suggestions regarding the dissemination of the Istanbul talks were listened to. At the closing of the meeting Prof. Icaz Geylani spoke on behalf of the participators and expressed his thanks and gratitude to the Political Talks Centre Association for their preparations for the meeting and Pendik Municipality for an excellent organisation.
